Display Results

This features allows the user to sort the search results either alphabetically or by educational value rating. The default display is sorted by educational value rating.

Education Level

The content of each website in the Guide is evaluated for appropriate education level (Elementary, High School, and/or University). Some websites have content that is useful for multiple education levels.

Educational Value Rating

The educational value rating for each site is indicated by a number icon (1 - 5) which corresponds to the number of educational features it offers. Sites with fewer features (and therefore lower ratings) may include material of significant educational value. However, we recommend that students begin their investigation of a topic by visiting higher-rated sites first.

Factsheets

This feature icon indicates sites that provide brief overviews or summaries of topics to introduce the reader to the subject matter. Factsheets can be provided as pdf files, MS Word files, HTML text, etc. Factsheets typically include useful introductory information (history, chronology, definitions, descriptions) on nonproliferation topics. The site may or may not refer to this material as "factsheets".For example, the OPCW calls its factsheets, "factfiles."

Example: Factsheets can be found at http://www.armscontrol.org/

Full Text Documents

This feature icon identifies sites that contain full text documents that can be provided as pdf files, MS Word files, HTML text, etc. Examples of full text documents include articles, scholarly papers, treaty texts, reports, briefings, or policy papers. A site that has only one or two full text documents available will not be identified as having the full text feature.

Example: Full text documents can be found at http://www.stimson.org/pubs.cfm

Internship/Fellowship Opportunities

This feature icon identifies sites that contain information on internship or fellowship opportunities for students. Many organizations offer undergraduate and graduate internships in the summer as well as during the academic year.

Example: Internship opportunities can be found at http://cns.miis.edu/cns/edu/intern.htm and http://cns.miis.edu/cns/edu/summer.htm.

Keyword Structure

The search engine for the Guide has three levels of keywords. There are 8 main keywords (arms control, disarmament, export controls, missile defense, nonproliferation, organizations, regions and treaties). These primary keyword topics are general concepts. Each primary keyword has its own set of subtopics. The subtopics are also fairly general but divide the primary keyword into more precise topics. Each subtopic is further divided into even more specific keywords to help focus your search.

For example, "Arms control" is divided into 10 subtopics (Biological weapons, Chemical weapons, Conventional weapons, International organizations, Missile defense, Missile technology, Nuclear weapon-free zones, Nuclear weapons, Regions, and Treaties/agreements). Each of these subtopics has its own set of more specific keywords. See the example below:

Arms control >> biological weapons >>

>>Ad Hoc Group (VEREX)
>>BTWC
>>Geneva Protocol
>>Mendoza Accord
>>Australia Group
>>Trilateral Agreement on Biological Weapons
>>Verification
>>Inspections

You will see the keyword options for further narrowing your search at the top of the results page

Languages

This feature indicates the languages used in the website. The Guide includes websites in many different languages. The user may search for websites in a specific language by using the Feature Search. The languages found in the website will be indicated in your search results.

Example: A site that contains extensive information on arms control in both English and Russian can be found at http://www.armscontrol.ru.

Major Topics

In the Major Topics section, the user will find the key topics of a website. A key topic is one that is covered in-depth and will therefore be of particular educational value to the user. The individual topics are linked directly to the page in the website that contains the information on the topic. The user will readily be able to find the information on specific topics by clicking on these links.

This feature icon highlights sites that include educational multimedia, such as photos, graphics, audio and video files, interactive online tutorials, or webcasts.

Example: An UNSCOM photo collection can be found at http://cns.miis.edu/research/iraq/_gallery.htm.

Organization Category

The Category indicates what type of organization hosts the website. There are six organization categories: Education, Government, International, Media, NGO & Private.

  • Education - This category includes high schools, colleges, universities, and academic institutes (i.e., Center for Nonproliferation Studies).
  • Government - This category includes agencies, departments and branches of national governments (i.e., U.S. Department of Energy).
  • International - This category includes multilateral organizations that involve cooperation between national governments (i.e., International Atomic Energy Agency).

Example: A reading list can be found at http://www.ceip.org/files/nonprolif/resources/readinglist.asp.

Searching the Database

The database can be searched by keywords, features or any combination of both. In order to maximize your use of the Guide, be as specific as possible in your search.

The database can be searched by keywords, features or any combination of both. Using the keyword section of the search page, the user types in a word or phrase (ex: Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty) or selects a topic from the keyword menu (ex: Arms Control). A keyword selection from the pull-down menu will produce a list of possible subtopics as well as search results based on the selected keyword. The search may be narrowed further on the results screen by selecting a subtopic.

The feature section of the search page allows the user to search the database for sites with certain educational features such as internships, full text documents, factsheets, multimedia, references or link collections. The user can also limit the search to sites with content appropriate for certain education levels (elementary, high school & university), to sites with a specific Educational Value Rating (assigned by CNS), to sites in a specific language, or to sites with various Teaching Tools.
